What are the Effects of Hard Water?

You realize that there are two different kinds of water. Almost everyone has heard about hard water, but may not know exactly what it is. Hard water can do damage to your appliances and even to your skin and hair. This is because the hard water has a lot of impurities in it and over time these elements in the water will build up on surfaces. Hard water can contain dissolved mineral elements like iron, rust, calcium, and magnesium just to name the most common. If you have hard water you will likely notice it first where the water is allowed to get on surfaces like sinks, bathtubs, and faucets because it leaves a crusty hard scale that can be difficult to remove without the aid of some strong cleaners.

Hard water can make your skin dry out and even cause it to itch. In some cases you will end up with problems with your hair and the way it will lay and even the way it will feel. Hard water can build up on the hair strands just like it builds up on other things and it will probably lack as much luster, body, and shine as it could have. Washing your hair with hard water can make it much more difficult to style after it is washed and dried.

Effects of hard water can shorten the lifespan of many appliances. If you were to buy a certain appliance and it says that the item will last 10 years, hard water might make it need to be worked on or wear it out well before its time. This hard water will coat and plug up the lines on the inside of the appliance. Appliances that can be damaged or eventually destroyed because of hard water build up inside of them are refrigerators, dishwashers, garbage disposals, washings machines, and hot water heaters. It is definitely not good for your water pipes either.

You can have a soft water treatment system installed and make sure that this system is connected to all of your lines in your home and all of the appliances that use water. Soft water can be treated with sodium that can give it a salty taste, but the affects from soft water are much more desirable than those of hard water any day. People that use well water from their own property will often use these types of treatments to eliminate hard water, although they are not the only ones.
